Police: Immigrants, here illegally, caught burglarizing Bridgeton home

(reported by Courier-Post June 4 2017)

Two homeless immigrants living in the country illegally were arrested – and one was later released — after they were caught trying to break into a house, police said.

Mario Velasquez, 43, and Luis Lopez-Lopez, 32, were nabbed Saturday morning outside a home on the 100 block of East Commerce Street, police said.

A resident called police around 10:40 a.m. to report the two men were trying to enter his home.

Officers said they arrived and found Velasquez and Lopez-Lopez trying to pry open the rear door with a knife.

Police said they contacted Immigration and Customs Enforcement because the suspects admitted they were in the country illegally, but the agency did not respond by the time officers had finished processing the men.

Velasquez was charged and released pending a court hearing under the state’s new bail reform guidelines, police said.
