Man charged with assault of police officer, EMT in Sparta

(reported by New Jersey Herald – Aug 18 2017)

Yelling obscenities, banging his head against the glass inside a police vehicle and against the wall of his holding cell, and throwing a chair inside a hospital room led to the arrest of a Madison man on charges including aggravated assault, police said.

Zachary Losapio, 25, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and an emergency medical technician, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, simple assault, and criminal mischief.

At about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, Sparta Police patrols were dispatched to the area of Shawnee Trail for a report of a female screaming.

When patrols arrived, they located a disturbance on Seneca Trail and observed a man — later identified as Losapio — yelling obscenities at other people on the deck of a home, police said.

When asked to calm down and step off the deck by patrols, Losapio ignored all commands and began challenging the officers.

Losapio was forcibly placed under arrest and put into a patrol car, where he started banging his head against the glass, police said.

He was transported to Sparta headquarters to be processed.

At headquarters, the Sparta First Aid Squad was summoned to the cell block area to evaluate Losapio due to his high intoxication and his self-inflicted injuries.

During that time, police said, Losapio became more violent and attempted to assault officers and EMT personnel.

Losapio continued to bang his head against the concrete wall of the cell block and was restrained and transported to Newton Medical Center for evaluation, police said.

In the hospital, police said, Losapio continued his “antics” and threw a chair in the hospital room.

Sparta Police Lt. John Lamon said that he was treated and released from the hospital pending a mandatory court appearance.
